The Big Reveal of Our Master Bedroom

The day is finally here, when I get to share the results of our Master Bedroom renovation with you. Before we go forward, let’s look back and remember how far we’ve come in just a few short weeks.

In this room we were faced with the most difficult challenges we’ve ever encountered. The walls had three layers of wallpaper and below that, the original plaster was badly cracked. Our wood floors were caked with 7 layers of old paint. We steamed and scraped the walls, scraped and sanded the floors, worked with a heat gun to remove all of the old paint from our original wood trim, and sanded and caulked each groove in the original beadboard ceiling. Then we put it all back together.

Needless to say, we’re thrilled to be done, and can’t wait to start enjoying our newly renovated bedroom.

Let’s talk about all of the beautiful components that went into the making of our space, starting with the most luxe bedding.

Bedding

What is a bedroom, if not for beautiful bedding? I had the privilege of partnering with Garnet Hill for our bedding for this One Room Challenge. If you were here for our Guest Bedroom Renovation last spring, you’ll remember that I also worked with Garnet Hill on that project. After staying a few nights in our Guest Bedroom, my husband and I realized how much we loved the Dream Quilt and sateen sheets from our Guest Bedroom, and needed them in our Master Bedroom too. If you’re looking for the most luxurious sheets ever, then look no further! Garnet Hill’s sateen sheets are my favorite sheets of all time. We even had our initials custom embroidered on our pillow cases. I also selected their classic embroidered duvet and Garnet Hill’s signature down alternative comforter too, which will be lovely to cozy up to this winter.

Finally, for someone who’s cold-natured like I am, a throw blanket is an everyday essential. It doesn’t get any more luxurious than this ribbed cashmere throw. I can’t wait to curl up with it.

Rug

In our Master Bedroom, I leaned-in to my favorite hues like black and white, cream and beige, with accents of cool blue and gray. The finished space is elegant & restful, just as I imagined it would be. For our space, I selected the most luxurious rug, the Calvin Klein Lunar in Pewter from Nourison. I love how silky it feels underfoot, and know it will be wonderful when stepping out of bed each morning. I also love how the cool Pewter tones ground the room, and tie together with the gray tones in our headboard. It makes the whole space feel so intentional.

Lighting

My plan for our Master Bedroom was to create a serene space with thoughtful details that nod to the past, while looking to the future.

I think that this push-pull between past and future is especially evident in the lighting I selected. The Lynden chandelier from Hudson Valley Lighting, is one I’ve gushed over for years. I love its’ ribbed metal texture, and how it contrasts with the creamy alabaster shade. There’s something so romantic about how the alabaster glows at night. This fixture reminds me of the Chrysler Building, a favorite landmark from my time living in New York.

For our bedside lighting, I chose the Classic No. 1 wall sconce which transport me to a favorite sidewalk cafe in Paris. The pleated silk shade and the brass styling of the hardware reminds me of cafe curtains hanging in the window at a beautiful bistro. I’m really glad that we chose wall sconces in lieu of the traditional table lamps, as it frees up space on our nightstands for other things. Best of all, these sconces are plug-in so no hardwiring is required!

Still to come

The biggest change in our Master Bedroom is still to come, and that’s the installation of our new Mitsubishi mini-split heating and cooling system. Since purchasing our home two years ago, we’ve been without heating and air conditioning on our second floor, which happens to be where our Master Bedroom is located. We’ve relied upon portable a/c units to (unsuccessfully) regulate our upstairs air temperature, and knew it was time for a change.

Rather than going with a traditional HVAC system, my husband and I decided that for so many reasons, a mini-split system was the best solution for our historic home. We’re planning to have the new system installed in the coming weeks, and I’ll do a follow-up sharing the pros and cons of the two different types of systems, and how the new mini split system works in our space.

A very special thank you to my wonderful sponsors, Garnet Hill, Hudson Valley Lighting, Nourison, and Mitsubishi. Thank you for your support and your contributions towards this project! Also thank you to my sweet neighbor who allowed me to come clip a few flowers from her garden for this photoshoot.

If you’re new here, I hope that you’ll subscribe below and stick around. There are so many new projects in the works that I’m excited to share with you in the coming weeks. For now…a nice long rest.

Until next time!
