Stamped 19th C French Empire Commode with Marble Top

$3,395.00
sold out

This French Empire commode dates from around 1804-1815, when Napoleon ruled France. A rare find, this special piece has been stamped by the cabinet maker, or menuisier, "F. De Mahieu". His hand markings and personalized stamp can be seen on the joinery beneath the marble top. The stamp indicates that Mr. Mahieu was an official member of the French guild system, the Jurande Menuisiers Ebénistes.

This lovely French commode boasts book-matched mahogany veneer, and a marble top. There are four dovetailed drawers with finely cast gilt bronze escutcheon plates, which offer plenty of storage space. An original skeleton key is included, and can be used to operate the antique drawer locks.

This elegant and historic piece would be a high fashion statement in an entryway, bedroom or living area. You could even use it as a sideboard in a Dining Room, where it's ample drawer space would be the perfect spot to store dishes and serving ware.

Dimensions: 46”W  x 20”D x 40”H

Condition: Several areas with veneer loss. Top drawer closes roughly. The bottom boards in two of the drawers have separated, causing them to catch when drawers are closed. Wood, veneer damage to the bottom right corner of the piece (as shown in photos). Line of paint/discoloration on the front left foot. Overall a lovely and rare piece in good antique condition.

Shipping: This piece includes complimentary shipping (within the 48 contiguous United States). Most pieces arrive within 3 weeks. Find out more about our shipping policies and timeline here.
