19th C Austrian Folk Painted Marriage Trunk, Pine Blanket Chest

The paint is all original on this lovely Austrian marriage trunk or chest, dating from 1870. Constructed from pine with hand dovetailed joinery, this special piece has been adorned with paintings of flowers in vases, a popular folk art motif of this time period. The side panels bear the date 1870, which would have been the marriage date for the couple who this blanket chest was gifted to.

Strong and sturdy and ready for use, the chest seat raises on original iron hinges to reveal ample storage space inside. There's even a smaller side compartment for storing personal items. The chest rests on bun feet, and features an original lock that still functions. One skeleton key is included.

Grand in scale at 29.5"h x 48"w. x 27.5"d, this piece has so many different uses. Place it at the end of a bed for storage, or use it between a pair beds as a statement-making nightstand. We also think it would make a marvelous entry or mudroom bench, where all passerby can admire it.

Condition: Some minor cracks, nicks, scratches, small bits of white paint. There is wear to the painted finish, especially on the top. The top back edge has some wear / wood losses (as shown in photos). Plenty of that good type of patina! Considering its' age, the original painted finish is in remarkable condition. Overall, this a beautiful piece with an elegant, time-worn finish
