19th Century Hungarian Painted Pine Bench

This marvelous piece is an antique Hungarian / Romanian Box Bench or painted settle dating from the mid-to-late 1800's, about 1860-1890. Constructed from pine, this special piece features its' original grain paint with faux bois finish, along with traditional Eastern European folk-inspired floral motifs. The bench seat raises on original iron hinges to reveal ample storage space inside. two artist's marks are just visible on the back left of the bench.

Historically, in the small rural villages of Hungary and Romania, the family gathering spot during temperate months was on a wide porch or veranda where this bench would have been located. These painted benches were the spot where the family would gather. Often benches would be painted with family crests or colors, or regional symbols. Other Eastern European benches such as this one, would be grain painted to look like walnut or oak.

Dimensions: 78.5”W  x 21.5”D x 39”H

Condition: Minor cracks, nicks, scratches, small bits of white paint, wear to painted finish, minor damage to front right armrest (as shown in photos). Overall a beautiful piece with an elegant, time-worn patina.
