This special piece is a Japanese campaign chest, or Tansu chest dating from the early 20th century. Crafted in Japan during the Taishō period (1912-1926), it features exposed cross-lap joinery on top, and has all of its' original cast iron drawer pulls and corner brackets.

This tansu chest has four large drawers which offer ample storage space, and boasts a warm rich brown color with a rustic patina. Tansu chests were originally designed at portable storage chests (note the handle cut outs on each side) for clothing, and particularly the kimono. This Tansu was given as a marriage gift to a notable Japanese female musician.

With its clean lines and rich, rustic aesthetic, this Japanese Tansu Chest would be well suited to so many different settings. Use it as an entry chest, or for additional storage space in a living room, or bedroom. We also think it would make a wonderful oversized nightstand.

Dimensions: 33ʺW × 12.5ʺD × 33ʺH

Condition: This antique piece has plenty of scratches, dents, bumps, and small bits of paint, all of which add to its' rustic charm and warm patina. The second drawer from the top has minor wood loss on the lower right corner of the drawer face (as seen in photos). Overall this is a beautiful and charming piece in good antique condition.
