19th C Karelian Biedermeier Secretary
This remarkable piece is a 19th century Biedermeier Secretary. Crafted in Karelia (don't worry, we had to google it too) in the early to mid-1800's, we can only imagine the stories it holds. The Republic of Karelia is located between Finland and Russia, with a portion of the Karelian territory being taken by Russia in 1939.
The secretary features beautifully book-matched flame birch veneer, and ebonized details in the Biedermeier style. Above, a pair of glass cabinet doors conceal shelves for displaying books and decorative items. Open the secretary's roll top desk to reveal a pull-out writing desk with leather surface, and several "secret" drawers for storing your most prized correspondence. Below, three drawers with hand dovetailed construction provide additional storage.
Columnar elements adorn the front two corners of the secretary, with the cabinet resting on petite bun feet (with a pair of block style feet in back). The secretary comes with two original skeleton keys which can be used to operate the antique drawer locks.
We think that this piece would make a handsome addition to a library or study, and would be equally well-suited as a correspondence desk in a bedroom or living area.
Dimensions:
Condition: Light surfaces scratches. Small veneer losses, patches, and one minor bubble on the left side of the roll top desk. Clear lacquer drips on the upper left side of the cabinet (shown in photos). Overall a remarkable piece in very good antique condition.
Shipping: This piece includes complimentary shipping (within the 48 contiguous United States). Most pieces arrive within 3 weeks. Please note that all pieces are final sale. Reach out to us with any questions prior to purchasing.
